Australia is expecting a surge in the number of small scale battery installations to complement the almost 2 million household who currently have solar PV installed. The register will enable householders and businesses to compare storage brands in terms of cycles, depth of discharge,

The report concludes that the high prices were caused by closure of old, low-cost, coal generators which caused a reduction in supply and pushed prices up; the rising cost of fuel i.e. black and brown coal and gas; and the ‘gaming’ of the electricity market by major electricity generators. Gaming has been estimated to have cost customers as much as $800m in 2016-17. The report

This second blog builds on these ideas to put forward the clear case for multi-level coordination and governance in the energy revolution. Its reflects some of my thoughts from an event last week at the Energy Systems Catapult on Transforming places through clean growth. In common with many other countries, the

Frank Tudor has been instrumental in Western Australia (WA) in realising the benefits of DER in the electricity system. Western Power are the state-owned transmission and distribution company in WA and have been at the forefront of promoting the use of micro-grids. It will be interesting to see how Frank Tudor will integrate his expertise in

These type of events are great for hearing a range of perspectives on how the energy system is changing and getting insights into how different actors are doing different things. It can be easy to forget how much has happened over recent decades and years in terms of generation, transmission and distribution and how things that felt like

AEMO and the ENA have given possible frameworks for integrating DER: A single integrated platform where the market operator provides a central platform in which all distribution level actors are able to participate. A two-step tiered platform in which the DNO’s are responsible for optimisation and

Harriet Sansom, Centre for Sustainable Energy, 14th June 2016 It’s time to spread the benefits of community energy … Most community energy projects happen in more affluent areas. This means that the benefits of local energy schemes – a solar installation on a village hall, say, or a collective buying initiative – are less widespread than they ought to be.That’s not to say that there is no community energy activity in low-income neighbourhoods – see below for some great examples. But there could be

It is therefore important to get these consultations ‘right’ – and from my perspective ‘right ‘ equals putting in place an energy system which removes barriers to delivering, whilst positively encouraging, the move to a smart and flexible energy system which is
