Shad genetic research

Natural England funded research to optimise genetic markers for use in shad population research

This research project is developing genetic markers for population genetic studies on Allis shad (Alosa alosa); the markers developed are being used to analyse samples of Allis shad from the Plymouth Sound and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation.  Early results suggest that the suite of markers developed will be if use for analysing Allis shad and Twaite shad (Alosa fallax), both of which are increasingly rare in UK marine waters and rivers.

A full report on this work will appear on completion of the research.
