What is EMPSEB?

European Meeting of PhD Students in Evolutionary Biology

EMPSEB provides a platform for PhD students studying Evolutionary Biology to present their work and to meet their peers from all over Europe. It takes place in a different European city each year and is organized by current PhD students in that country.

Typically, EMPSEB lasts 4 or 5 days and involves 70-100 participants. A variety of activities, discussions, and excursions provide opportunities for building relationships with fellow researchers.

The meeting is now an annual tradition that started 18 years ago with the first meeting back in 1995 being held in Zurich, Switzerland.

What happens?

Participants come from across Europe to attend and give talks about their work to an audience mostly made up of other PhD students. Joining the participants are 8-10 senior scientists who are invited to give plenary talks, run discussion groups, and to provide guidance about starting your scientific career.

Where?

Located in the south-west of Great Britain on a peninsula tumbling into the vast Atlantic Ocean, Cornwall is home to captivating fishing harbours, spectacular beaches and world-renowned surf. The event will be hosted by the Centre for Ecology and Conservation at the University of Exeter Cornwall Campus (recently named University of the Year in the Sunday Times University Guide 2013), a leading research institute exploring the factors that influence biodiversity and complexity in the natural world. Delegates will be welcomed at the Cornwall Campus's new state-of-the-art Exchange building, a teaching and research hub boasting excellent and flexible spaces for talks and networking. Accommodation will be in comfortable flats on site, allowing interaction, collaboration and socialising to continue throughout the meeting.

Who?

We are an international, dynamic and welcoming group of PhD students who will bring you talks from researchers at the forefront of scientific discovery, and to top it off a taste of everything that life on the Cornish peninsula has to offer!

What?

EMPSEB provides a platform for PhD students studying Evolutionary Biology to present their work and to meet their peers from all over Europe. Whilst delegates will primarily be PhD students, a selection of senior academics from across Europe will attend to give plenary talks and run workshops. It takes place in a different European city each year and is organised by current PhD students in that country.

Don't worry if you've only just started your PhD and haven't got any results under your belt yet, delegates are more than welcome to present the background to their PhD and their research goals. The main purpose of the meeting is to share ideas, practice your oral presentation skills in a less intimidating environment than a major conference, and to have fun!
