Progress On The CTRL

After almost five years' construction work, the first Eurostar ran on section 1 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link on April 13 2003. The future of high speed rail links in Britain is here now.

Initial runs with the train were at 20mph, but over the coming months it will be worked up to the line speed of 186mph, smashing the UK's land speed record.

At King's Cross, the Stratford tunnel portal is now complete, with the breakthriugh of the first tunnel boring machine planned for the third quarter of 2003 - around three months earlier than planned.

The second bore of the Thames Tunnel was started on April 10 2003 - a week ahead of schedule - and is likely to form the only rail access to a new infrastructure railhead planned on the south side of the Thames.
