The exciting science of deep-sea biology began in earnest when HMS Challenger collected thousands of animals new to science. At the time experts like Percy Sladen, an authority on starfishes, described the priceless material for posterity, and some of his magnificent collection is displayed in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. David Nichols, Emeritus Professor of Biological Science at the University of Exeter and Vice-President of the Marine Conservation Society, is Percy Sladen's biographer and will talk about Sladen's life and work.
