The McClean Dome

The McClean Dome houses the McClean Telescope and Cooke Siderostat.

The McClean dome ante-room is fitted with an optical bench working with a partially restored, but working siderostat. In 1997 the project was not complete, but the intention is to build a spectro-heliograph for spectral studies of the Sun.

The McClean telescope carries most of the current programme of scientific observations and, with the new dark-room, astro-photography will play a larger part. The building was restored in 1997 by the East Devon District Council, given new rails and running gear and it now turns easily.

The building is not always available for public use owing to preparations for scientific work.
