Lockyer’s 30-inch Mirror

All that remains of Lockyer large reflecting telescope is the mirror cell and mirror.

This mirror was tested in 1989 and found to be faulty, although refiguring could correct the defects. At the time the Science Museum expressed a preference that it should not be refigured as it is one of only two mirrors in existence made by Dr. Common.

However, a working party, under John Pope, developed a design to incorporate the mirror into a large reflecting telescope for the observatory. This project would require the construction of a new dome, but would make the observatory attractive to university research in optical development and computer imaging. This possible future project does not form part of this proposal.
