The Norman Lockyer Observatory Collections

A working observatory not only has telescopes but collections of records: working notes, log books, journals, photographs and so on. We have been fortunate to secure the return of much of the material which was associated with this observatory and its predecessor in Kensington.

The Members' Library consists of current books whilst the Lockyer Library is of historical interest, consisting of books, journals and charts from the start of Lockyer's career up to the mid 1980s.

The photographic material - lantern slides and glass negatives - is still being sorted. Only the plates of astronomical spectra - the main output of the Observatory in its heyday - have been fully catalogued as yet.
