Research Interests:

In the early 1990s, I attempted to design marine protected areas in Belize and experienced the frustration of having inadequate science with which to make recommendations. How large should reserves be? Which habitats should have the highest priority for inclusion in a reserve? How can species populations be protected? How does the configuration of habitats influence the design of reserves and so on? All of these questions are spatially-explicit and my research focuses on spatial processes occurring on coral reefs. I have three main areas of research.
- Improving methods for gathering spatial information on coral reefs. This involves remote sensing and radiative transfer modelling.
- Ecological processes occurring on coral reefs, with a particular emphasis on spatial models. These projects include the patch dynamics of corals and algae, competition between corals and algae, and spatial patterns of grazing by parrotfish.
- Merging pattern and process (1 and 2 above) to gain large-scale insight into coral reef dynamics. Ultimately, the aim is to develop ecological models which can be applied directly maps of coral community structure. The application of spatial models in this way provides fresh insight into the effects of climate change on coral reefs and how reefs should best be managed.
