Previous Work And Current Research Interests
During my time at Southampton University, I participated in an expedition to Belize with Coral Cay Conservation (CCC). CCC trains non-professional divers in coral reef surveying techniques in order to aid the establishment of marine reserves. The work in Belize stimulated my interest in coral reefs and led to an undergraduate dissertation on reef fish communities. After graduation I joined CCC's science team and worked there for over eight years. My role was co-ordination of the CCC science programme in the Caribbean, South East Asia, South Pacific and Red Sea. I left CCC at the end of 2001 to join the Marine Spatial Ecology Lab in order to complete my PhD.
My PhD was entitled "The ecology of coral reef communities at seascape scales". It was completed as part of a larger project entitled "Coupled natural and human dynamics in coral reef ecosystems: The effect of marine reserve network design and implementation on fisheries, biodiversity, and humans" based in the Bahamas and funded by the US National Science Foundation. My research concentrated on (1) the effect of a marine park on coral and fish community structure (2) patterns of inter and intra-habitat variation in fish communities and the use of habitats as surrogates of biodiversity (3) patterns and controls of habitat (beta) diversity across the archipelago (4) mapping ecosystem processes across reef seascapes. I am currently a Teaching Assistant and post-doctoral researcher within the Marine Spatial Ecology Lab.
Teaching
I am currently responsible for teaching a second year undergraduate module entitled "Marine biology" and have joint responsibility for the second year field course to the Bahamas. I also teach a third year module entitled "Tropical Marine Biology".
Other Activities
I have acted as UK co-ordinator for Reef Check since 1997. Reef Check is a programme to complete an annual global synopsis of the state of the world's coral reefs using volunteer divers and marine scientists. I am a founder member of the Reef Conservation - UK committee. RCUK organises an annual one day conference for UK reef researchers, published a newsletter and administers a small grants scheme. I also develop and present marine survey workshops and review project proposals on behalf of the RGS Expedition Advisory Centre and BP Conservation Programme.
