Areas of Interest
The MARES Project is building on Professor Agius's previous ethnographic work in the Arabian-Persian Gulf and Oman, which focused, in particular, on the history and provenance of tradtional wooden vessels and their construction, the crew, folklore history, resources as well as trade in the Western Indian Ocean. The expanded MARES team enables a more diverse methodological approach – including the systematic survey of boat distribution, architecture and construction methods. While the MARES Project is focusing on surviving wooden boatbuilding traditions in the Gulf of Aden and southern Red Sea, it has five major overlapping areas of interest: Data sources include historical archives, environmental data, historical cartography and published archaeological reports. This will be supplemented by archaeological and ethnographic fieldwork around the Red Sea and Arabian/Persian Gulf littoral. |
