New Thinking: Energy System Change not Climate Change

Energy System Change not Climate Change Catherine Mitchell, IGov Team, 14th December 2015 COP21 has led to a new climate change policy agreement. While it could have been stronger, it could also have been weaker. The world had already tipped to a global discourse towards a sustainable energy future, based on renewables. What the Paris Agreement has done has strengthened that global discourse. The dominant underlying energy technology pathways of the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) is towards more renewables. There will of course be outlier countries, like GB, who choose nuclear over renewables but

Paper: Climate Change Benchmarking – constructing a sustainable future?

Climate Change Benchmarking: constructing a sustainable future? By: Caroline Kuzemko Published in: Review of International Studies, 41, pp 969-992 doi:10.1017/S0260210515000418 Available online: 25 November 2015 Abstract This article analyses discourses on climate change and mitigation through the deconstruction of European Union (EU) rhetoric and practices on climate benchmarking. It critically examines the motivations behind climate benchmarking, the methods used to construct international benchmarks, and the reasons for variety in domestic compliance. Germany and the United Kingdom are analysed as cases where domestic politics drive very different reactions to the practice of climate mitigation, differences that have

New Thinking: Contemporary US Political Party Energy Politics

Contemporary US Political Party Energy Politics – still a lot to play for  Catherine Mitchell, IGov Team, 10th November 2015 Just once in a while one goes to a meeting where one learns an awful lot in a short time. A three-person slot at a University of Columbia’s Energy Symposium about US energy politics last week was one of those wonderful knowledge transfer events – not really because of the deep knowledge base of the speakers – which is often the case – but, much more rarely, because the speakers (Heather Zichal and Jeffrey Kupfer)

    Aims of Day

Aims for the Workshop We are hoping to have a focused discussion which leads to clear principles for reform of the code governance system and governance architecture to fit for the needs of a rapidly evolving energy system. The issues are very interlinked so it is impossible to have discussion sessions which are entirely separate. We have split the day into two sessions, as it seems to us that there are two broad issues which need to be clarified. Session 1: Code simplification, consolidation and administration Questions to consider: Given the number, length and complexity
