Cider
Devon
has a long history of cider production in the UK although most of
its cider makers now operate on a very small scale, usually from just a
farm building. The most obvious place to find real cider is where it is made; there is a
list of South West cider producers available here.
Failing that, real cider should be available in the following pubs:
- Fountain Head, Branscombe (Green Valley Cyder)
- Masons Arms, Branscombe
- Rose and Crown, Calverleigh (Palmershayes)
- Culm Valley, Culmstock (Bollhayes and Burrow Hill)
- Double Locks, Exeter (Grays)
- Fat Pig, Exeter (cider and perry!)
- Old Firehouse, Exeter (Sam's, Thatchers)
- Well House, Exeter (Rich's Farmhouse)
- First and Last, Exmouth (Thatchers Dry)
- Prince of Wales, Holcombe Rogus (summer only)
- Dog and Donkey, Knowle (Weston's)
- Red Lion, Oakford (Weston's)
- Globe Inn, Sampford Peverell (Sheppys Cider)
- Lamb Inn, Sandford (Sandford Orchards)
- Rose and Crown, Sandford (Sandford Orchards)
A similar list for the whole of Devon is held on UKCider here.
Please let us know if your pub stocks real cider.
Cider & Perry Month
CAMRA celebrates Cider and Perry month in October, the month when Apple Day is also celebrated.
In 2004, some branch members went to Green Valley Cyder, Darts Farm for an
apple pressing and tasting session - we took some
pictures too.
In 2003, we went to help and observe apple pressing through straw at
Brimblecombe Cider - you can see how we got on by following this
link.
