Prof Bill Barnes

Bill Barnes is Professor of Photonics at the University of Exeter and leads a group that is pioneering research in an emerging area of nanophotonics where the nanostructured materials include metals. Metallic photonic materials demonstrate unique properties that allow the concentration and propagation of light well below the usual resolution limit. Crucially, by nano-structuring the metallic surface that supports surface plasmons their properties can be controlled in a way that allows the problems with absorption to be substantially overcome. This has led to a number of research themes which are being developed with funding from EPSRC and UK companies.

Prof Barnes is co-ordinator for a Framework 6 project Surface Plasmon Photonics.

Prof Bill Barnes is based in Exeter.
