Water Operational Research Centre at Brunel University

ACTUI related research at Brunel University is carried out in the Water Operational Research Centre (WORC) in the Department of Systems Engineering .  The centre has two full time academic staff, two full time research staff, one PhD student and one Engineering Dept student.

The aim of WORC is to facilitate research endeavour into mathematical modelling, control, optimisation and software design relevant to large-scale water distribution systems.

Objectives:

bullet

Modelling

To develop accurate mathematical models of the hydraulic, chemical and particulate behaviour of water in water distribution systems.

bullet

 Monitoring

To develop methods for on-line monitoring of large-scale water distribution systems (including automatic burst detection).

bullet

Control

To develop software based techniques that enable more efficient operational control of large-scale water distribution systems, including strategic control and pressure optimisation.

bullet

Forecasting

To enable accurate predictions of water consumption to be made through the use of extended period simulations coupled to optimisation and demand forecasting.

bullet

Enabling Technologies

To investigate the use and applicability of mathematical programming methods, artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms and other novel approaches.

bullet

Information Technology

To provide a software framework, using relational and/or object-oriented technologies, that facilitates open interaction with third-party applications.

Current Research Interests

bullet

Management of Uncertainty and Data Accuracy for On-line Monitoring

Funded by EPSRC.

bullet

Burst Detection in Water Networks.

Funded by EPSRC.

bullet

Risk and uncertainty.

Brunel are investigating new methods for operational risk optimisation and maximising security through design of trunk main systems.
